EC Chair, Deputies Have No Reason to Remain in Office – Fiifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Kwetey, has backed calls for the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and her deputies, describing their continued stay in office as unjustifiable following the disenfranchisement of some communities during the 2020 parliamentary elections.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Joy News, Mr. Kwetey said the failure to allow residents of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lipke and Lolobi (SALL) in the Oti Region to vote in the parliamentary polls constituted a grave democratic breach that cannot be overlooked.

According to him, denying citizens the right to elect their representatives amounts to one of the most serious crimes under any democratic system. He stressed that any institution that presides over such an occurrence loses the moral authority to continue managing the country’s electoral processes.

Mr. Kwetey, however, cautioned against hasty action, insisting that the constitutionally mandated procedures must be followed if the EC Chair and her deputies are to be removed. “I don’t want them to jump the gun. If the petition has been submitted, let due process be followed,” he said.

His comments come at a time when a staff member of the Electoral Commission has petitioned the President, seeking the removal of the EC Chairperson over alleged misconduct related to the SALL incident.
