Ghana has deployed troops from the 48th Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to Jamaica to support post-Hurricane Melissa reconstruction efforts.

The contingent was dispatched after President John Mahama approved an expanded humanitarian response, following earlier relief deliveries to Jamaica, Cuba and displaced communities in Sudan.

Those supplies included food items, locally produced rice, blankets, mattresses and medical essentials.

According to the President, the decision to send engineering troops followed consultations with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Hornace, who indicated that rebuilding and temporary shelter had become the country’s most urgent needs.

Ghana is also shipping tents by sea to support displaced residents, while the engineering unit undertakes construction, technical and logistical support, and community-based reconstruction works.

President Mahama described the deployment as a non-combat, humanitarian mission and commended the Ghana Armed Forces for their professionalism.

He urged the troops to uphold discipline, respect local authorities and communities, and represent Ghana positively abroad.

The President reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to supporting Jamaica’s recovery, describing the mission as a demonstration of solidarity and shared Afro-Caribbean ties.
