President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday evening returned to Ghana following his participation in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York.

He was received on arrival at the Accra International Airport by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, alongside a host of dignitaries including presidential staffers, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, as well as traditional and religious leaders. A welcome party had been organised to mark the President’s return.

President Mahama’s trip comes on the back of a significant diplomatic achievement for Ghana at the United Nations General Assembly. The Assembly adopted a resolution spearheaded by Ghana to formally recognise the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity.”

The resolution, tabled by President Mahama in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Reparations, is expected to strengthen global calls for justice, healing, and reparations for affected communities.

In the voting, 123 countries supported the resolution. However, three countries—the United States, Israel, and Argentina—voted against it. A total of 52 countries abstained, including member states of the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The President’s successful advocacy at the global forum has been widely regarded as a major step forward in the ongoing international conversation on historical accountability and reparative justice.
