Government Reduces Cocoa Producer Price to GH₵2,587 Per Bag Amid Global Market Slump

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced a reduction in the producer price of cocoa from GH₵3,625 to GH₵2,587 per bag for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season.

The decision follows months of payment delays to cocoa farmers, many of whom say they have not been paid for beans sold since November 2025.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, February 12, after an emergency Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, Dr Ato Forson explained that the price adjustment was necessitated by a sharp decline in global cocoa prices.

“The world market price has dropped significantly from an average of $7,200 per ton to $4,100 per ton, making Ghana’s cocoa beans uncompetitive and creating liquidity challenges,” he stated.

According to the Minister, the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC), which met under his chairmanship, recommended that farmers be paid 90 percent of the achieved gross Free On Board (FOB) price of $4,200 per ton in order to cushion them against the market downturn.

“As a result, effective today, Thursday, 12 February 2026, the new producer price for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season will now be 41,392 Ghana cedis per ton and 2,587 Ghana cedis per bag,” he announced.

Dr Ato Forson noted that the measure is aimed at injecting immediate liquidity into the cocoa sector to expedite payments owed to farmers and ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
