Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away.

The legendary composer and choir leader died on January 20, 2026, according to a confirmation by his artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Yaw Sarpong, who had remained largely out of the public spotlight in recent years, is reported to have battled a prolonged illness prior to his passing.

His death comes just weeks after the loss of his colleague and fellow gospel musician, Maame Tiwaa, marking a difficult period for the gospel music fraternity.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s gospel music history, Yaw Sarpong was celebrated for his exceptional songwriting talent and musical brilliance. His compositions played a significant role in elevating his renowned group, Asomafo, to national and international recognition, making it one of the most respected gospel ensembles in the industry.

Tributes have begun pouring in from musicians, church leaders, and fans across the country, many praising his immense contribution to gospel music and his enduring spiritual legacy.

Yaw Sarpong’s songs remain deeply rooted in Ghana’s Christian worship culture, continuing to inspire generations long after his passing.
