President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare for all Ghanaians, citing plans to strengthen primary healthcare, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and hospital services.

In a Facebook post after touring the Global Mercy hospital ship at Tema Port, the President said humanitarian assistance remained valuable but stressed that the government was committed to building a healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of the population.

Mahama outlined several areas of focus, including the expansion of free primary healthcare, strengthening the NHIS, investment in hospitals and health workers, and the use of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to reduce the financial burden of serious non-communicable diseases on families.

His comments followed interactions with Ghanaian patients receiving treatment aboard the Global Mercy, including children with orthopaedic conditions, some of whom had reportedly waited years for medical care.

The President welcomed the Mercy Ships team to Ghana for its fifth mission since 1991 and acknowledged the organisation’s contribution to medical treatment and the training of local health professionals.

The vessel is expected to remain in Ghana for 10 months, during which its international medical team will provide patient care and work alongside local health workers.

Mahama expressed appreciation to the organisation’s medical personnel, volunteers, donors and local partners for supporting the mission.

He said the government would continue working towards improved healthcare access while recognising the contribution of humanitarian organisations to the country’s health sector.

The President’s statement highlights the role of international medical partnerships alongside government efforts to improve healthcare delivery and reduce the financial challenges faced by patients and their families.
