Explosive Defamation Suit Hits Obaatanpa FM as NDC Chairman Demands GH¢10m Damages

The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, has filed a GH¢10 million defamation lawsuit against Kasoa-based Obaatanpa FM and its morning show host, Kofi Kyei Baffour, over allegations he describes as false and damaging to his reputation.

According to court filings and statements shared with the media, Prof. Asiedu is accusing the station and its presenter of broadcasting claims that he masterminded acts of violence within the NDC, particularly in the Awutu Senya East Constituency and other parts of the Central Region.

He described the allegations as “false, malicious, and intended to damage his reputation,” insisting that they were broadcast during a live radio programme without evidence.

Prof. Asiedu further alleged that individuals linked to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are behind attempts to tarnish his image through coordinated media attacks. He has, however, not provided evidence publicly to support this claim.

The NDC regional chairman also denied reports that he assaulted any staff member of Obaatanpa FM. He explained that his visit to the station was solely to seek clarification over what he described as repeated insults and defamatory remarks made against him on air.

In addition to the GH¢10 million damages claim, Prof. Asiedu is seeking an immediate public apology and retraction from both the management of Obaatanpa FM and the programme host.

He also addressed ongoing tensions within the Awutu Senya East NDC constituency, stressing that he has no personal involvement in internal disputes between the constituency chairman and the Member of Parliament. According to him, the issues predate his tenure and he has been focused on promoting unity within the party.

Prof. Asiedu further accused some staff of Obaatanpa FM of allegedly inciting tension and violence in Kasoa and surrounding communities through their broadcasts. He stated that the NDC, together with the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), has petitioned the National Communications Authority (NCA) to investigate the station over what they describe as inflammatory content.

As of now, neither Obaatanpa FM nor Kofi Kyei Baffour has publicly responded to the lawsuit or the allegations.
