The government has transferred GH¢6.1 million into the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, following salary deductions from John Dramani Mahama and his political appointees.

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed the development in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7, 2026. According to him, the Controller and Accountant-General formally notified the government after completing the transfer.
“The Controller and Accountant-General has formally notified Government that he has deducted and transferred a total of GH¢6.1 million to the Fund pursuant to the President’s directive,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu stated.
He explained that the deductions were carried out in line with commitments made by President Mahama during the launch of the Fund last year. At the time, the President pledged to donate six months of his salary to support the initiative.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that the President also encouraged all political appointees to contribute by donating one month of their salaries to the Fund.
In addition, appointees who failed to comply with the initial deadline for asset declaration were directed to forfeit three months of their salaries as a penalty, with the proceeds also earmarked for the Fund.
He further revealed that arrangements are ongoing to transfer a final tranche, which will include contributions from appointees who defaulted on the asset declaration directive.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Cares,” was established to support healthcare financing and provide assistance to vulnerable individuals who are unable to afford medical treatment.
