Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the government is engaging authorities in South Africa following a viral video that sparked concerns about possible xenophobic attacks on a Ghanaian resident.

According to the Minister, he has already held a telephone conversation with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, to formally raise the issue and seek clarity on the situation.

In a public statement, Mr Ablakwa described the scenes in the trending video as “extremely disturbing,” noting that the footage had triggered widespread anxiety among Ghanaians both at home and abroad.

He revealed that the South African Foreign Minister responded with empathy and assured that authorities would conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident.

“The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his concern and promised that the matter will be thoroughly investigated,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

As part of the response, the South African government is expected to engage with African diplomatic missions, with a scheduled briefing for African ambassadors aimed at addressing the concerns and outlining steps being taken.

Mr Ablakwa also indicated that Ghana is actively coordinating its response through its diplomatic mission in South Africa. He noted that he has been in constant communication with Ghana’s High Commission to monitor developments and ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals.

Importantly, the Ghanaian individual seen in the viral video has been identified and is currently receiving consular support.

“Our colleagues have located the main victim in the video and are offering the necessary assistance. He is doing very well,” the Minister confirmed.

He further reassured the public that no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded in connection with the incident, urging citizens to remain calm while diplomatic processes continue.

“No Ghanaian life has been lost. We urge calm and confidence,” he added.

Mr Ablakwa reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of Ghanaians everywhere, emphasizing that such concerns are treated with utmost seriousness.

He also called for restraint and unity, cautioning against actions or rhetoric that could strain relations between African countries.

“The Government of Ghana remains uncompromising about the welfare and safety of Ghanaians both home and abroad,” he stressed.
