The Government has announced plans to begin clearing the 17-month salary arrears owed to unpaid teachers from May 2026, offering renewed hope to hundreds of affected educators across the country.
This assurance was given to the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers following a protest march to the Ministry of Finance, where members presented a petition highlighting what they described as prolonged neglect and the continued denial of their rightful earnings.
Prior to the demonstration, the coalition had submitted a similar petition to the Presidency. The document was received by presidential staffer Dr. Samuel Ayeh, who assured the group that their concerns would be given the needed attention.
Addressing the aggrieved teachers at the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko reaffirmed government’s commitment to resolving the issue, indicating that concrete steps have already been taken to initiate payments.
He disclosed that the payment process would be executed in phases, beginning in May 2026. According to him, affected teachers will receive four months’ worth of arrears each month until the entire 17-month backlog is fully cleared.
“Even though the Finance Minister is out of town, he instructed me to conclude the processes, and I have written to the Controller to begin payment of your arrears. Payment will commence in May. In May, you will receive four months of arrears; in June, another four months; and in July, another four months until the payments are completed,” he assured.
The announcement is expected to bring significant relief to the affected teachers, many of whom have endured financial hardship and uncertainty due to the prolonged delay in receiving their salaries.
