The government of John Dramani Mahama has recorded a major economic milestone, with Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) surpassing GH¢100 billion within the first year of his administration.

Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo, announced that the achievement reflects renewed economic momentum and improved national standing across the African continent. According to him, Ghana has moved from the 10th to the 8th richest country in Africa, attributing the progress to what he described as decisive leadership and prudent economic management.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, February 22, 2026, Dr. Pelpuo said the milestone signals a turning point for the country’s economy.

“This government is committed to transforming Ghana’s fortunes. In just one year, we have demonstrated that effective leadership and sound policies can reposition the country. Moving from 10th to 8th place among Africa’s richest economies and recording a GDP above GH¢100 billion is clear evidence that Ghana is on the right path,” he stated.

The minister emphasized that the administration’s focus on job creation, labour reforms, and strategic economic planning has helped stimulate growth across key sectors. He noted that targeted investments and improved fiscal discipline have restored confidence among businesses and development partners.

Dr. Pelpuo further assured Ghanaians that the government remains committed to sustaining the gains made so far. He explained that policies aimed at boosting employment, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and strengthening industrial productivity would remain central to the administration’s economic agenda.

He added that while challenges remain, the government is determined to build on the current momentum to improve livelihoods and expand opportunities for citizens nationwide.

The announcement marks a significant development in Ghana’s economic outlook, as the administration positions itself to consolidate growth and enhance the country’s competitiveness within Africa.
