The Kenkey Festival: 10 Years of Cultural Projection

The Kenkey Festival—affectionately known as Kenkey Fest—is set to mark a monumental milestone this year. On 7th March 2026, Efua Sutherland Park will transform into a culinary battleground and cultural haven as the event celebrates its 10th anniversary.

What began as a bold experiment to celebrate Ghana’s most resilient staple has blossomed into one of the country’s most anticipated food tourism events. Beyond its hallmark of bringing people together, Kenkey Fest has cemented itself as a vital calendar event for Ghanaians and international patrons alike, turning the humble ball of corn dough into a symbol of national unity and setting the pace for Eat Ghana Month, which has seen other food events adopt March as a culinary month in celebration of Ghana’s Independence.

From Yamoronsa to the Caribbean, Kenkey Fest reignites friendly rivalries between lovers of Ga Kenkey (Komi) and Fante Kenkey (Dokono). But the festival’s palate has always been broader than just the big two.

This 10th edition promises to showcase the full spectrum of the delicacy—from the classics, the tart white Ga Kenkey and the nutty, plantain-leaf-wrapped Fante Kenkey, to distinct millet-based varieties like Tiafia from Tamale.

The Caribbean variations, including Doukounou and Blue Draws, highlight the trans-Atlantic journey of this corn-based heritage, making the Kenkey Festival a cultural bridge between Africa and the Caribbean.

Long-time fans of the festival know the “buzz” isn’t just about the kenkey—it’s about the culture of eating. It has become famous for its “Mashke” (Mashed Kenkey) smoothie bars and eating competitions that test the limits of even the most dedicated foodies.

This year’s family-friendly itinerary includes playful innovations around traditional preparation and social entertainment. Expect a collective celebration of heritage that draws chefs, musicians, and multiple generations together. The buzz from previous years suggests the return of the popular “Kenkey Karaoke” sessions and traditional games like Oware, Ludo, and Ampe, creating a nostalgic playground for adults and children alike.

Since its inception, the Kenkey Festival has proven that culture can drive care. The event has consistently embarked on impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, ensuring the celebration leaves a lasting mark on the community—from providing a marketplace for locals to publicise their businesses to spearheading health initiatives, including a long-term collaboration with Sickle Life to provide free sickle cell screening and counselling. It has also partnered with One Heart Cares to raise funds and awareness for renal patients, supporting dialysis treatments for those in need.

Launched on 7th March 2016 by a visionary group of young Ghanaians, the Kenkey Festival began as a passion project to elevate local cuisine. Ten years later, it stands as a testament to the power of cultural branding.

The 10th edition promises to be a walk down memory lane, honouring the founders, the chefs, and the patrons who turned a local staple into a global attraction. The 10th anniversary at Efua Sutherland Park is not just an event—it is a decade of Ghanaian history served on a plate.

Don’t miss out on the biggest food celebration of the year.
