The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has unveiled a new cultural initiative that designates every Wednesday as a day for wearing Fugu, popularly known as Batakari, as part of efforts to celebrate and preserve Ghana’s cultural identity.

In a statement issued on February 10, 2026, the Ministry explained that the initiative is intended to inspire Ghanaians, both within the country and in the diaspora, to proudly showcase the traditional attire in its wide range of designs, colors, and styles.

According to the Ministry, the decision forms part of a broader national agenda to deepen appreciation for Ghana’s cultural heritage and project a strong sense of identity on the international stage. By encouraging the regular wearing of Fugu, the government hopes to reinforce cultural pride and visibility.

The statement further highlighted the expected economic impact of the initiative, noting that it will boost activities across the local textile and fashion industry. Weavers, designers, artisans, and traders involved in the production and sale of Fugu are anticipated to benefit from increased demand.

Officials believe the move will not only stimulate growth within the creative economy but also create new employment opportunities across the country, particularly in communities where Fugu production is a major livelihood.

The Ministry expressed confidence that the nationwide adoption of Fugu on Wednesdays will serve as a unifying symbol for Ghanaians, strengthening national cohesion while affirming the country’s cultural confidence to the world.
