TV Sets Were ‘Goodwill Gestures,’ Not Meant to Influence Votes – Baba Jamal Insists After Ayawaso East Primary Win

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary held in the Ayawaso East Constituency, even as allegations of inducement trailed the contest.

Speaking to journalists after the conclusion of the election, Baba Jamal dismissed claims that gifts distributed to delegates were intended to influence the outcome of the vote. He explained that the items, which included 32-inch television sets and free boiled eggs, were merely gestures of goodwill extended to party delegates and not an attempt to buy votes.

His comments come amid heightened scrutiny following the NDC’s announcement that it had received reports of alleged bribery and inducement during the primary. The party has since launched an investigation into the matter.

The Ayawaso East primary was organised to select the NDC’s candidate for an upcoming parliamentary by-election. Five aspirants, all of whom passed the party’s vetting process, contested the seat. They were Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed; Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed.

The leadership of the NDC has reiterated its commitment to enforcing party discipline and ensuring that internal elections are conducted in accordance with its rules and democratic principles.
