Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has assured journalists that Ghana’s Parliament will not pass any law aimed at stifling media freedom under his leadership.

He gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf by the Member of Parliament for La Dade-Kotopon and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, at the 3rd Annual Dinner Night of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) held in Accra on Monday, December 23.

Mr Bagbin acknowledged growing concerns within the media landscape that laws regulating digital and electronic communications are increasingly being used to harass and intimidate journalists. He noted that such practices undermine press freedom and weaken democratic accountability.

According to the Speaker, any existing legislation found to threaten media freedom would be reviewed to ensure it aligns with the constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and press freedom.

He emphasised that a free, independent, and fearless media remains a critical pillar of Ghana’s democratic governance, pledging Parliament’s commitment to protecting the rights of journalists while maintaining responsible regulation.
