Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has retained some of the most experienced legal practitioners in the United States to challenge Ghana’s efforts to extradite him.

Dr Ayine made the revelation on Thursday, December 18, 2025, during the government’s Accountability Series, shortly after Ghana formally submitted an extradition request to US authorities.

According to the Attorney General, it is standard practice for individuals facing extradition proceedings to contest the process through the courts. He explained that Mr Ofori-Atta has exercised his legal right by engaging highly skilled lawyers with extensive experience in extradition cases.

“The person who is the subject of an extradition will fight it in court. I have been informed that Mr Ofori-Atta has hired some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” Dr Ayine stated, adding that the move does not intimidate Ghanaian authorities.

He noted that extradition matters in the United States are handled within the federal judicial system and are subject to multiple layers of judicial review. These include proceedings at the federal district court level, appeals to the circuit court, and, where necessary, a final determination by the US Supreme Court.

Dr Ayine acknowledged that the legal process could be protracted but expressed confidence in the strength of Ghana’s case, stressing that the final decision would rest with the US judicial authorities.
