Financial Strain Hits Asaase Radio One Year After NPP Loss, Staff Laid Off in Cape Coast

Asaase Broadcasting Company (ABC), owned by political strategist Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has taken Asaase Radio 100.3 FM in Cape Coast off air, laying off its on-air staff due to financial challenges.

The decision comes nearly a year after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost political power, a development that significantly affected the station’s revenue streams. Asaase Radio reportedly relied heavily on advertising and other financial support linked to the then-ruling NPP, which has since declined.

Before the suspension of operations, the station laid off its on-air staff, with the termination taking effect from January 31, 2026. In a letter addressed to staff and signed by the General Manager, Kojo Mensah, management explained that the move followed a review of the station’s financial performance by the Board.

Despite several attempts to improve revenue generation, the Cape Coast station was unable to raise enough income to meet its operational costs, making continued broadcasting unsustainable.

Management emphasized that the layoffs were strictly a business decision and not the result of any misconduct or poor performance by the affected employees.

In accordance with Ghana’s labour laws, workers affected by the layoffs are expected to receive one month’s salary in lieu of notice.
