President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana has begun the process of exiting the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, citing renewed economic stability and restored international confidence.

Speaking in his New Year’s address on January 1, 2026, the President said the decision reflects the progress made since his administration assumed office amid severe economic challenges.

He explained that Ghana inherited heavy debt burdens, weakened institutions, and fading investor confidence. Through what he described as prudent management and tough reforms, the government has renegotiated the country’s debt obligations while protecting national sovereignty and ensuring long-term sustainability.

President Mahama said increased domestic and foreign direct investment over the past year demonstrates renewed trust in the Ghanaian economy and a return of credibility with international partners.

He emphasized that Ghana’s exit from the IMF programme is being pursued “with dignity,” stressing that the country is engaging the Fund as an equal partner rather than a dependent nation.

According to the President, improved macroeconomic indicators, stabilised currency performance, and rising growth levels have strengthened Ghana’s position on the global economic stage.

President Mahama called on Ghanaians to remain united and committed to national development, saying sustained discipline and collective effort will be key to securing lasting economic prosperity.
