President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, November 27, officially inaugurated the Vegetable Development Project under the Feed Ghana Initiative, describing it as a pivotal step toward enhancing national food security and expanding irrigation infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch event attended by farmers, traditional leaders, and project partners, President Mahama revealed that the initiative will feature a modern packhouse to facilitate the grading, sorting, packaging, and cold storage of vegetables produced through the program.

The President indicated that the project is scheduled for completion within 12 months and underscored plans to replicate the model in other parts of the country, particularly in northern regions, where limited water supply during the dry season has historically hindered agricultural productivity.

“The entire project has been carefully designed to be completed within 12 months. This Vegetable Development Project will be replicated in many other parts of the country, especially in the north, where water availability is a major challenge at many times of the year,” he said.

Beyond improving food production, President Mahama emphasized the project’s role in job creation. He noted that strengthening the vegetable sector would generate new employment opportunities and contribute to the development of a 24-hour agricultural economy, helping to absorb the growing workforce while promoting sustainable growth.

The launch marks the latest effort by the government to modernize Ghana’s agricultural sector and bolster its resilience against seasonal water shortages, positioning the country for long-term food security and economic growth.
