Former Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has issued a stark warning to New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates, urging them to avoid electing a flagbearer who could embarrass Ghana internationally.

The senior lawyer, addressing party faithful in Mpraeso, Eastern Region, cautioned against selecting a candidate who lacks the diplomatic decorum required for the global stage.

“Let’s not make a mistake and elect someone who will insult world leaders when he travels to the United Nations,” Atta Akyea stated emphatically.

He stressed that Ghana’s hard-won reputation must be protected, especially at high-level forums like the UN General Assembly where temperament and statesmanship are paramount.

The former minister argued that the party’s next leader must possess the maturity to engage constructively with the international community, framing the upcoming primary as a critical test of judgment.

The NPP is set to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 elections on 31 January. The contest is largely seen as a two-horse race between former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former MP Kennedy Agyapong.
