Transport fares are set to increase by 8% from Saturday, September 26, 2026, following an agreement between the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ministry of Transport.
The adjustment follows weeks of negotiations after the GPRTU initially proposed a 30% increase to reflect rising operational costs.
Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said the union eventually agreed to the 8% increase after the government assured transport operators that further reductions in fuel prices were being pursued.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, September 22, Mr Amoah said the union had been seeking an increase of at least 25% but accepted the lower adjustment after discussions with the ministry.
Mr Amoah said operators are currently running their businesses at a loss but agreed to the 8% adjustment because of the expected reduction in fuel prices in the next pricing window.
He explained that the union was also mindful of the wider effect of transport fare increases on consumers and therefore decided to accept the government’s assurance.
However, he said the GPRTU would return to the Ministry of Transport if the expected reduction in fuel prices does not materialise.
“It’s a promise given to us and if it fails, we will still go back to the ministry to let them know that the promise given to us has not been fulfilled. Then we will see what will help our operations,” he said.
