The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has uncovered a significant stash of ammunition concealed within a mechanic workshop in Bolgatanga.

The discovery was made after an auto mechanic reported suspicious items found at his workplace on Saturday, May 9, 2026. According to police, the alert was triggered by the mechanic’s apprentice, who noticed unusual packages while cleaning the premises.

Concerned by the find, the mechanic promptly informed authorities, leading to a swift response from officers of the Upper East Regional Command. A police team was dispatched to the location, situated near the Assemblies of God Church, to conduct a search.

During the operation, officers uncovered two tightly sealed packages hidden inside fertiliser sacks placed within a hen coop on the workshop compound. Upon inspection, the packages were found to contain a total of 1,400 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, with each packet holding 700 rounds.

The police have since secured the ammunition as evidence and launched an investigation to determine its origin, ownership, and intended purpose.

Officials say no arrests have been made so far, but investigations are ongoing as authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the concealed cache.
