Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has stressed that Ghana’s opening fixture against the Panama national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the most decisive match of the Black Stars’ group-stage campaign.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, the Croatia national football team, and the England national football team. The tournament is set to kick off in June 2026, with expectations high for the West African side.

Speaking in a television discussion, Gyan described the opening encounter against Panama as a must-win game, insisting that Ghana’s progression in the tournament could heavily depend on securing maximum points in that fixture.

“This is the most important game we have in the group,” he said, adding that while Ghana may appear stronger on paper, the team must not underestimate their Central American opponents.

He warned that Panama’s qualification for the World Cup alone proves their quality, urging the Black Stars to approach the match with full seriousness and focus.

“Statistically, we are ahead of them, but we don’t know what they are going to bring to the table,” Gyan noted. “The last time I watched them, I knew we have to be very careful.”

Gyan further described Group L as “very tricky,” highlighting that a strong start would boost Ghana’s confidence heading into difficult matches against European powerhouses Croatia and England.

He concluded by urging the Black Stars to take the tournament one game at a time but emphasized the importance of winning the opener.

“Everybody will be expecting us to beat Panama, but any team that qualifies for the World Cup has done something right,” he said. “Against Panama, we must make sure we take all three points. Nothing less.”
