President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of an interconnecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at Accra International Airport, marking the commencement of a major infrastructure expansion aimed at reducing congestion and strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
The ceremony, held in Accra, signals the beginning of a project designed to improve operational efficiency and enhance the overall passenger experience at the country’s busiest airport.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama emphasized that the initiative is more than a symbolic gesture, describing it as a strategic investment in Ghana’s aviation future, economic competitiveness, and service delivery standards. He noted that passenger traffic growth—from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025—reflects Ghana’s increasing connectivity and attractiveness as a regional travel and business destination.
While welcoming the growth, the President acknowledged the operational strain it has placed on airport infrastructure, particularly during peak travel periods. He stressed that congestion at key service points has become a challenge requiring urgent and forward-looking solutions to sustain efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
The planned concourse will connect Terminals 2 and 3 seamlessly and is expected to feature modern boarding bridges, expanded waiting lounges, VIP facilities, retail spaces, and upgraded passenger service infrastructure. Officials say the design will significantly improve passenger flow and reduce transfer delays between terminals.
Once completed, the project is expected to enhance operational coordination at the airport and reinforce Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a preferred aviation gateway in West Africa.
