President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, setting out an ambitious roadmap to position the country as a leading technology hub in West Africa and across the continent.

Speaking at the launch event in Accra on Friday, April 24, the President described the initiative as a defining moment in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda. He emphasized that the strategy signals a shift from merely adopting emerging technologies to actively shaping and deploying them to drive national development.

According to him, the move reflects Ghana’s determination to build a digitally empowered and innovation-driven economy capable of competing on the global stage. He noted that artificial intelligence will play a critical role in accelerating economic growth, improving public services, and creating new job opportunities.

“This is a significant milestone in our national journey towards a digitally empowered, innovation-driven and globally competitive Ghana,” President Mahama stated. “We are making it clear that Ghana will not be a passive consumer of technologies shaping the future, but an active participant in designing, governing and deploying them.”

The strategy outlines a comprehensive framework focused on strengthening governance systems, fostering innovation, and building the necessary human capital to support AI development. It is also expected to guide the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence across key sectors of the economy.

President Mahama further highlighted the importance of leadership in driving the successful implementation of the strategy. He revealed that ministers and senior government officials recently underwent a National AI bootcamp aimed at deepening their understanding of the technology and its implications.

He explained that equipping decision-makers with the right knowledge is essential to navigating the rapidly evolving digital landscape and ensuring that policies align with global technological trends.

“Our vision is clear — to position Ghana as a leading AI hub in West Africa and the wider African region,” he said. “This includes driving innovation, strengthening institutions, and delivering inclusive development for all Ghanaians.”

The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy is expected to serve as a key pillar in Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence in the global digital economy, while ensuring that technological advancement translates into tangible benefits for citizens.
