President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Ghanaian diaspora, describing Ghanaians abroad as a critical extension of the nation’s development agenda.

Addressing members of the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia, the President underscored the immense contributions of the diaspora, noting that remittances alone amount to approximately US$7.8 billion annually. He stressed, however, that their value goes beyond financial support, highlighting their role in knowledge transfer, innovation, and global exposure.

President Mahama used the occasion to outline key economic and governance priorities, including efforts to stabilise the economy, promote export-led growth, and strengthen local industries. He also highlighted plans to implement a 24-hour economy policy aimed at boosting productivity and creating jobs.

On governance reforms, the President pointed to the development of a national anti-corruption strategy and the establishment of a Gold Board to formalise gold trade and enhance revenue generation.

In the health sector, he announced the rollout of a free primary healthcare programme at district hospitals and CHPS compounds. Additional initiatives include the integration of sickle cell treatment into public health services, deployment of 6,000 health volunteers for community screenings, and the creation of a Ghana Medical Trust Fund to support treatment for non-communicable diseases.

Touching on legislative progress, President Mahama revealed that a bipartisan bill is advancing to allow Ghanaians abroad to fully participate in governance, including eligibility for parliamentary and ministerial appointments. He pledged to grant presidential assent once passed.

The President also praised the diaspora for preserving Ghanaian culture through music, dance, and traditional practices, while recalling Ghana’s historic links with institutions such as Lincoln University, which helped shape Kwame Nkrumah’s Pan-African vision.

He concluded by urging Ghanaians abroad to deepen their engagement through investment, knowledge sharing, and active participation in national development initiatives.
