Freddie Blay Granted GH₵800,000 Bail Over Controversial Demolition Dispute

The Koforidua High Court has granted bail to former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, in the sum of GH₵800,000 with two sureties who must be residents in Accra and possess valid Ghana Cards.

The ruling comes after Mr Blay was earlier remanded by the Akropong Circuit Court in connection with an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase. He is expected to reappear before the circuit court on April 9, 2026, as investigations continue.

Mr Blay was handed over to the Ghana Police Service in Akropong following the execution of a warrant for his arrest in Accra on Monday, March 16, 2026. The case arises from allegations that he ordered the demolition of a house under construction on a parcel of land at Kitase.

Police say the landowner lodged a complaint after Mr Blay allegedly failed to honour an invitation to assist with investigations. He was subsequently charged but did not appear before the court on a scheduled arraignment date in April 2025, prompting the issuance of the arrest warrant.

However, sources close to the former party chairman dispute the claims, insisting he was unaware of the warrant prior to his arrest. They argue that the matter stems from a long-standing land dispute involving property he reportedly acquired in 1994, which later became subject to litigation.

According to these sources, Mr Blay did not order the demolition of any building but instead directed that a bare piece of land be cleared in January 2026 to prevent the breeding of dangerous animals, including reptiles.

They further indicated that although the complainant initially secured a favourable ruling at the High Court in Koforidua, that decision has since been appealed. Efforts to serve the complainant with legal processes related to the appeal, they claim, have so far been unsuccessful.

The case continues to draw attention as legal proceedings unfold, with the next hearing expected to shed more light on the disputed claims.
