Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has announced the payment of GH¢237 million to cocoa farmers for 50,000 metric tonnes of cocoa, offering relief to producers who have faced months of delayed payments.

The Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Jerome Kwaku Sam, disclosed the development in a Facebook post on Wednesday, February 18.

“I’m happy to report COCOBOD has started payment of the 50,000 metric tonnes. An amount of GH¢237 million has been paid,” Mr. Sam stated.

The announcement comes at a critical time for Ghana’s cocoa sector, which has been grappling with financial strain and concerns from farmers over outstanding payments stretching back several months.

In response to the challenges, the government recently introduced reforms, including a reduction in the producer price for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season. The new price has been set at GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag.

Authorities say the price adjustment is intended to cushion farmers against declining global cocoa prices while ensuring some stability within the industry.

The cocoa sector remains a key pillar of Ghana’s economy, and stakeholders are closely monitoring how the latest payments and policy adjustments will impact farmers and overall production levels in the coming months.
