The Government of Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama has deployed a first batch of 121 nurses to Antigua and Barbados as part of a three-year health workers exchange programme aimed at strengthening international health cooperation.

The initiative, rooted in bilateral agreements between Ghana and its partner countries, seeks to provide Ghanaian health professionals with international exposure while supporting host nations facing critical shortages of nursing staff.

Under the programme, Ghanaian nurses will work in selected health facilities in Antigua and Barbados, contributing their expertise to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

The nurses were officially seen off at the Kotoka International Airport by the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah; the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh; and the Minister of State in Charge of Special Initiatives, Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum.

Speaking at the brief send-off ceremony, government officials commended the nurses for their service and described the programme as a strategic step toward strengthening Ghana’s global health diplomacy while expanding professional development opportunities for local health workers.

The deployment marks the beginning of a broader plan that will see more Ghanaian health professionals posted to partner countries over the next three years, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to international collaboration in healthcare and workforce development.
