The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated formal steps to expel former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, after he publicly criticized the party, labeling it “fake” and casting doubts on its internal democratic processes.

In a statement issued by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said it had taken “due notice” of remarks made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng during a Channel One TV interview on Monday, 12 January 2026. During the interview, the former minister stated that he no longer considers himself a member of the party.

The party described Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments as “disparaging” and specifically criticized his claims regarding the 2023 presidential primary, which he alleged was rigged in favor of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s candidate for the 2024 general elections.

“The Party unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s unfortunate characterisation of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary,” the statement read. It added that the contest was “free, fair, transparent, and credible,” and that all aspirants had widely accepted its outcome.

The NPP described Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s public conduct as “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the Party,” arguing that his remarks undermined internal cohesion and discipline.

“Consequently, the Party has invoked the relevant provisions of its Constitution to commence the necessary processes to expel him from the Party, strictly in accordance with due process,” the statement concluded.

The move marks a significant escalation in tensions between the former minister and the NPP, raising questions about the party’s handling of dissent and the broader implications for its internal politics ahead of the 2024 general elections.
