Duncan-Williams Urges GH¢100,000 Savings Before Weddings, Warns Against Debt

Founder and leader of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has criticised the growing culture of extravagant weddings, urging couples to prioritise financial stability over costly ceremonies.

In a sermon captured in a viral video, the Archbishop cautioned against organising weddings without adequate financial preparation, suggesting that grooms should have a minimum savings of GH¢100,000 before proceeding with a wedding.

“If the man cannot prove that at least he has GH¢100,000 in his bank account, he shouldn’t have a wedding,” he said, warning that starting marriage in debt often creates unnecessary stress. According to him, many couples begin their marriages burdened by unpaid bills from wedding vendors, which negatively affects their ability to function as a family.

He further criticised the obsession with white weddings and lavish receptions, particularly among young people with limited financial resources. Archbishop Duncan-Williams stressed that marriage should not be confused with the wedding ceremony itself.

“Marriage is not a wedding,” he noted, adding that love alone cannot sustain a home without financial responsibility. He argued that couples who lack financial capacity should reconsider marrying until they are economically stable.

The Archbishop’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion online, with many social media users supporting his call for financial prudence, while others argue that marriage should not be restricted by wealth.
