Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, has described the Tema Development Corporation’s (TDC) Ho Oxygen City Community 27 Project as one of the most significant developments in the history of Ho and the Volta Region.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the project, Togbe Afede said the initiative symbolised a major boost to the city’s growth and development, describing it as an “early Christmas gift” to the people of Ho.

He commended President John Dramani Mahama for championing balanced regional development and for supporting initiatives that extend major national projects beyond traditional growth centres.

The Agbogbomefia explained that Ho had earned the “Oxygen City” accolade because of its clean environment, rich vegetation, scenic mountain ranges and strong commitment to environmental preservation. He noted that the city had deliberately resisted illegal mining and other environmentally harmful activities to protect public health and promote clean living.

Togbe Afede praised former and current Municipal Chief Executives as well as the Volta Regional Minister for sustaining Ho’s reputation as one of the cleanest cities in Ghana.

He expressed gratitude to the Board and Management of TDC Ghana Limited for their extensive consultations with traditional authorities and local stakeholders, saying the inclusive approach had fostered community ownership of the project.

Acknowledging the leadership of the TDC Managing Director and Board Chairman, Togbe Afede noted that Ho’s population, currently estimated at about 200,000 and growing faster than the national average, had increased pressure on housing and hospitality infrastructure.

He said Ho had evolved into a major educational, commercial and administrative hub, hosting reputable senior high schools, tertiary institutions, banks and corporate offices, while maintaining peaceful coexistence among its diverse ethnic population.

The Agbogbomefia revealed that new investments were underway in aviation, health and financial services, including plans to position Ho as a centre for health tourism. He said the Oxygen City project would help unlock the city’s full potential by attracting industries, skilled professionals and investors seeking a clean, peaceful and well-planned urban environment.

Togbe Afede assured the government and TDC of the full support of traditional authorities to ensure the peaceful implementation and timely completion of the project, pledging continued commitment to environmental sustainability through afforestation and climate action initiatives.
