Troubled Akufo-Addo Denies Seeking Mahama’s Intervention for Ofori-Atta

The Office of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed as false reports claiming he is seeking a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama to secure assurances for the safe passage of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to the office, the allegations are a complete fabrication and should be disregarded by the public.

The clarification comes at a time when Mr Ofori-Atta is embroiled in legal battles with several anti-graft institutions, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), over allegations of causing financial loss to the state during his tenure.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the former president’s office described the reports as “utterly false” and without any factual basis.

“The office wishes to state emphatically that this publication is utterly false. It is a total fabrication by the supposed source. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has neither contemplated such a consideration nor expressly or impliedly made any request or representation to President John Dramani Mahama,” the statement said.

The office further reaffirmed Mr Akufo-Addo’s commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law, stressing that he has no intention of interfering in ongoing legal processes.

While acknowledging that the former president is personally concerned about Mr Ofori-Atta, given their familial relationship and the latter’s service as Finance Minister during the Akufo-Addo administration, the statement emphasized that such concern does not translate into attempts to influence investigations or prosecutions.

“He remains a firm believer in democratic principles and due process,” the statement noted, adding that all individuals must be allowed to account for their stewardship under the law.

The office concluded by urging the public to disregard the claims, stating, “Hopefully, this sets the record straight on the matter.”
