The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to present a comprehensive report on the mediation of the Bawku conflict to President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, December 16, as part of ongoing efforts to secure lasting peace in the area.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was appointed earlier this year by President Mahama to lead mediation efforts aimed at resolving the decades-old chieftaincy dispute that has fueled recurrent violence in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region.

The mediation process officially commenced in April 2025, with the Asantehene holding separate engagements with representatives of the feuding factions to initiate dialogue and build confidence among the parties. Although the talks were temporarily suspended, they resumed in May 2025 and have since contributed to a period of relative calm in the area.

Sources indicate that the report to be presented to the President will outline key findings from the mediation process, progress achieved so far, and recommendations intended to guide the next phase of government action towards restoring sustainable peace and stability in Bawku.

Bawku has experienced intermittent violence over several years as a result of chieftaincy disputes, leading to loss of lives, displacement of residents, and disruption of economic activities. The Asantehene’s mediation is widely regarded as a crucial step toward a long-term resolution of the conflict.
