Martin Kpebu released by OSP

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has been released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after he was detained on Wednesday, December 3—a development that temporarily halted plans to question him over corruption allegations he has made against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

He was released Wednesday evening after meeting bail conditions set for him.

Kpebu, who had arrived at the OSP for an engagement with investigators, reportedly clashed with police officers at the entrance and was taken into custody before any interrogation could commence. Sources say the Special Prosecutor could not proceed with questioning while he remained in police custody.

He was later granted bail requiring a landed property in his name as security, but when his lawyer returned to complete the process, Kpebu could not be found.

The incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Kpebu and the Special Prosecutor. The lawyer has repeatedly criticised the OSP’s investigative approach, accusing the office of procedural lapses and of assigning inquiries to junior officers who report directly to Mr. Agyebeng.

Speaking to journalists ahead of a previous meeting at the OSP last week, Kpebu said he would only cooperate with investigators if an independently constituted committee handled the case, insisting that the current set-up compromises fairness and integrity.

He has also referenced past concerns about the investigation into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, alleging that the OSP mishandled basic procedural steps in that matter as well.
