The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the Ministry of Education will soon begin purchasing excess eggs from poultry farmers across the country to address the current glut affecting the market.

The move, according to the Minister, is followed by a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who instructed that the excess supply of eggs be absorbed through the School Feeding Programme to support both farmers and pupils.

“The issue was raised before Cabinet, and His Excellency the President directed the Ministry of Education to ensure that the glut is cleared to support the School Feeding Programme. The Ministry is now preparing to clear the glut, and very soon, you will see them on the ground procuring the excess eggs. So, relating to the glut, the issue has been solved,” Eric Opoku said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, November 10.

The Minister’s assurance comes as poultry farmers, particularly in the Bono Region, continue to grapple with severe losses due to an oversupply of eggs and declining market prices. Some farmers have been forced to sell off their birds prematurely to minimise financial strain.

The Agric Minister underscored the government’s intervention, which seeks to protect local poultry businesses and stabilise the market, also ensuring that nutritious, locally produced eggs are used to feed children under the national school feeding initiative.

Meanwhile, the official launch of the Nkukor Nkitinkiti programme is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The initiative seeks to boost domestic poultry production by providing day-old chicks, poultry feed, and veterinary support to households nationwide.
