A trip from Accra to Johannesburg ended in an arrest after South African authorities allegedly discovered a large quantity of suspected heroin in the luggage of a 52-year-old South African man at OR Tambo International Airport.
The passenger was detained on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following an intelligence-driven operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Border Management Authority (BMA).
Authorities said the man had arrived in South Africa on a flight from Accra, Ghana, when officials conducted a search of his luggage. During the inspection, officers reportedly found several bullet-shaped objects and blocks containing substances believed to be heroin.
The suspected drugs have an estimated street value of more than R2 million.
The arrest forms part of a wider crackdown on drug trafficking through South Africa’s major entry points. SAPS said the latest case is the third suspected drug-mule arrest recorded at OR Tambo International Airport within the past three weeks.
The authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect, and investigations are continuing to determine where the suspected narcotics originated and whether other people were involved.
The 52-year-old is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week, where he will face charges linked to alleged drug trafficking.
SAPS said its investigation would also focus on identifying possible links between the suspect and organised trafficking networks operating across international borders.
The police have pledged to maintain intelligence-led and targeted operations at ports of entry as they seek to disrupt networks involved in the movement of illegal drugs.
The latest seizure comes as South African authorities increase scrutiny of international routes used by suspected drug traffickers, including routes connecting the country with other African destinations.
