Constitution Review Committee Proposes Five-Year Presidential Term, Rules Out Third-Term Option

The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has proposed extending Ghana’s presidential term from four years to five years, arguing that the current tenure is inadequate for effective governance.

Presenting the Committee’s report to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22, Chairman of the CRC, Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, clarified that the recommendation does not include provisions for a third term for presidents.

According to Prof. Prempeh, the Committee found no public demand or political appetite for a third-term option. He stressed that even President Mahama himself was not supportive of reopening discussions on term limits.

“We couldn’t find a place for a third term for the President,” Prof. Prempeh stated, adding that the Committee intentionally avoided debates that could undermine constitutional stability.

The Committee’s focus, he explained, was on improving governance efficiency by giving governments more time to plan, implement, and evaluate policies within a single term.
