Presidential Hopeful Bryan Acheampong Questions Dr Bawumia’s Economic Record After NPP’s 2024 Defeat

Presidential hopeful Bryan Acheampong has cast doubt on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic track record, suggesting it played a key role in the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections.

Speaking to Osei Bonsu on Asempa FM monitored by MyNewsGh, Acheampong highlighted the party’s economic strategy in 2016, when Bawumia was brought in as running mate to address concerns over the cedi’s value.

“The strength of our candidate was the economy. Akufo-Addo said the cedi was worthless, so he was bringing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Ghanaians believed that narrative because he was coming from the Bank of Ghana,” he said.

Acheampong argued that despite those touted credentials, the economy deteriorated under the NPP, contributing to its decisive loss to the NDC in 2024.

“We all know what happened in the end,” he said, reflecting on the party’s failure to manage the economy effectively.

Looking ahead, Acheampong questioned whether Bawumia, now a presidential hopeful, could be trusted to lead the party again.

“Are we able to present the same candidate on the economy? Big question,” he said, implying that voters and party members may be sceptical given his record.

On the issue of his own business dealings, concering the SSNIT hotels he was said to have acquired illegally, Acheampong added that such controversies were distractions.

“Everybody also knows that it was propaganda,” he said, emphasising that the real issue is leadership and economic competence, not alleged personal transactions.
