Bagbin pushes ahead with gov’t business amid Minority protests

Amid tense scenes in Parliament, Speaker Alban Bagbin has pushed ahead with government business despite efforts by Minority MPs to halt proceedings.

The Speaker’s decision followed the Majority caucus’s rejection of the Minority’s bid to adjourn the House, which came after attempts to prevent Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from addressing Parliament.

Minority MPs, dressed in black, had demanded an adjournment after hours of debate over the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacancy.

Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh argued that no government business should continue until the controversy is resolved.

After a voice vote, the Speaker ruled that business could proceed, prompting the Minority to escalate their protest with chants and vocal disruptions. Tensions peaked as MPs from both sides converged in the center of the chamber, resulting in a chaotic stand-off with loud exchanges. Parliamentary marshals struggled to restore order.

Despite the unrest, Speaker Bagbin emphasised that the legislative agenda must continue, underlining his commitment to ensuring the operations of Parliament are maintained.
