The former Member of Parliament for La-Dade Kotopon in the Greater Accra Region has taken a swipe at former President John Dramani Mahama for declaring his intent to contest on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 general elections.

According to the former MP, it would be suicidal for the party to field Mahama as the party’s flagbearer in the next elections. He believes that would spell doom for the party. Speaking on Atinka FM over the news item to the effect that Mahama has declared his intention to lead the party into the next polls against President Akufo-Addo, Namoale had this to say;

”I am very much disturbed and worried about this news. Mahama coming back as what? what is he coming back to do? Let me be frank with you, Mahama leading the NDC is like doing or staking lotto. This is senseless, and we don’t need this” a worried Namoale said.

”But what is his motivation to come back? This is sheer greed. If he is not greedy, would he come back? I am urging the party delegates to reject him else we shall lose again. How can we win against President Nana Addo with the same Mahama who he beat soundly in the last elections? Even with our achievements, we could not withstand Akufo-Addo and his NPP, so what makes him think that he can beat him without anything to show Ghanaians? We need a new face altogether. That is why I support Professor Joshua Alabi” the outspoken former MP of La-Dade Kotopon said.

Former President Mahama has announced that he would lead the party against President Akufo-Addo in the next elections. Though it was expected, for some reasons, many in the NDC, especially those who do not support his candidature are expressing worry over the development since that would not be in the interest of the party.

Many of Mahama’s opponents hold the view that it would be better to select a new candidate so that if the party fails to win the next elections, that same candidate can be used in the 2024 elections, and that would likely help them win power. Presenting Mahama who can rule for just a term, in the unlikely event that he wins the next elections, he cannot go for another term in 2024, and they would have to start from scratch to market a new candidate, and that will be disastrous for the party in future elections.

The NDC is at the crossroads as it is struggling to elect the next candidate to represent the party in the next elections. Sticking with John Mahama appears to be suicidal to a section of the party members as they contend that he is no longer sellable.
