President John Dramani Mahama has directed an expansion in recruitment across the country’s security services, increasing the intake target from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over the next four years.
The directive was issued following a high-level meeting with heads of the various security agencies, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Acting Minister for Defence, Cassiel Ato Forson, to review the ongoing recruitment process.
According to a statement issued on Monday, March 16, the President was briefed on the progress of the exercise before instructing that the number of men and women to be recruited into the services be significantly increased to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
President Mahama also emphasised the need for transparency and fairness throughout the recruitment process, urging the leadership of the security agencies to ensure that qualified applicants are given equal opportunity.
The meeting brought together key officials within the national security structure, including the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and the National Security Coordinator.
Also present were the heads of the various security institutions, including the Inspector-General of the Ghana Police Service, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the Director-General of the Ghana National Fire Service, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Samuel Amadu and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.
The expanded recruitment drive is expected to boost personnel strength across the security services while providing additional employment opportunities for young people seeking to join the sector.\
